COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: OLD PHYSICAL PLANT TUNNELS
PHYSICAL PLANT TUNNEL
| Physical plant tunnel with new steam pipes along the right and old coal-cart tracks along the floor. Note the brick walls; newer institutional steam-pipe tunnels (built in the past 50-60 years) are usually constructed of poured concrete. |
| As in
the previous photo, note the remnants of tracks embedded in the
floor. The pipes and cables above range from water lines to ethernet
wiring. |
OLD COAL HOPPERS
| These rusted
hoppers, several levels below even the basements, are the remnants
of a time when the University was heated with coal. |
|
Old
coal hoppers, in a room with several inches of water covering the
floor. Note the rusted remnants of tracks that end beneath these
hoppers.

TUNNEL BEDROOM
| Now
flooded and uninhabitable, this hidden chamber was once a summertime
bedroom for one of the University's most adventurous students.
