COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: OLD PHYSICAL PLANT TUNNELS

PHYSICAL PLANT TUNNEL

Physical plant tunnel with new steam pipes along the right and old coal-cart tracks along the floor. Note the brick walls; newer institutional steam-pipe tunnels (built in the past 50-60 years) are usually constructed of poured concrete.

As in the previous photo, note the remnants of tracks embedded in the floor. The pipes and cables above range from water lines to ethernet wiring.

OLD COAL HOPPERS

These rusted hoppers, several levels below even the basements, are the remnants of a time when the University was heated with coal.

Old coal hoppers, in a room with several inches of water covering the floor. Note the rusted remnants of tracks that end beneath these hoppers.

TUNNEL BEDROOM

Now flooded and uninhabitable, this hidden chamber was once a summertime bedroom for one of the University's most adventurous students.
